The Mountain

I work on the mountain
Deep down in a hole
Like my old man before me
And his old man before
A lamp in my hand
And an ache in my bones
The weight of this mountain is killing me slow
It’s killing me slow

I left behind my family
My sons and my wife
To climb up this mountain
And give up my life
Walked away from home for the money and coal
This mountain kills dreams
And it crushes the soul
It crushes the soul

I work on the mountain
Deep down in a hole
Like my old man before me
And his old man before
And as I lay broken
Deep under the ground
Pray that my sons will not follow me down
They’ll not follow me down
